5 Reasons to Honey Cleanse!
Using honey as a gentle cleanser can be a great option for people with sensitive skin or anyone who prefers to avoid harsh ingredients. And it doesn’t have to be a sticky mess!
Luckily honey washes off easily with a bit of warm water (see my honey cleansing ritual is at the end)!
Here are five reasons to wash your face with honey:
Natural Moisturizer: Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it helps retain and attract moisture. Washing your face with honey can leave your skin hydrated and soft without stripping away natural oils, making it an ideal cleanser for sensitive skin.
Gentle Exfoliation: Honey contains enzymes that provide gentle exfoliation by removing dead skin cells. This helps in unclogging pores, preventing breakouts, and promoting a smoother complexion without the need for abrasive ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Honey has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritated skin. If you have sensitive or redness-prone skin, using honey as a cleanser may help calm inflammation and reduce redness.
Antibacterial Benefits: Honey has antibacterial properties that can help fight acne-causing bacteria. Using honey as a cleanser may aid in preventing and managing breakouts, making it a suitable option for those with sensitive skin prone to acne.
Rich in Antioxidants: Honey is rich in antioxidants that help protect the skin from environmental damage. Regular use of honey as a cleanser may contribute to maintaining a healthy and radiant complexion for individuals with sensitive skin.
Pro Tip: Honey is most beneficial raw and unprocessed.
Want extra skin renewing benefits?? Try Glo Ritual’s Green Magic - Botanical Honey Mask - it doubles as a cleanser! It has the added benefits from Japanese matcha, passionflower, blue lotus, and calendula to brighten, hydrate, and renew your skin. I love a product with multiple uses!
Remember - not all products with honey are made intentionally, so check the ingredient list and stick with brands you can trust that have sustainable sourcing and practices.
Honey Cleansing Ritual:
Remove any eye makeup: Use a natural eye safe oil (I like Everything Oil) applied to a cotton ball or reusable cleansing pad. Gently wipe away the eye makeup. I usually wet the pad with a little water after to get any residual oil out of my eyes.
Wet Your Face: Splash some lukewarm water on your face.
Scoop That Honey: Ideally using a small clean spoon or utensil, scoop a small amount of honey or Green Magic (about 1/2 teaspoon or less) into your damp palm and warm it up.
Apply and Massage: Spread on your damp face. Massage in gentle, circular motions, just like any cleanser. Add some water if you can’t easily move it around.
Let It Sit (Optional): If you have a few extra minutes, leave the honey/mask on your face for a bit. Feel free to meditate, dance around, brush your teeth, or answer a quick text while you wait. Honey is gentle so can be left on for 15-30 mins (or more!). You may want to make it a bit thicker if doing a longer treatment.
Rinse Time: Rinse your face and neck with lukewarm water to remove. You can also use a soft damp wash. A slight residue is okay, it will not be sticky when it dries.
Apply your skincare: I spritz and pat in a hydrating mist (a traditional toner is not necessary since you already balanced your skin’s pH with the honey), and then apply your moisturizer. I love a adding couple pumps of Everything Oil to my moisturizer or just mixing my oil + mist together for a simple moisturizer. Our Botanical Elixirs are my favorite because they have a mix of plant waters, organic glycerin, and probiotics for extra hydration.
This ritual is a quick and nourishing way to care for your skin without using harsh or stripping ingredients. Let me know how you like it!
