Face Oil: Your Skin’s Winter Bestie

Your face will thank you for adding a skin loving oil to your daily ritual. But not just any oil will do.

I wasn’t always a fan of face oil — but that’s because I wasn’t using the right one. A high quality blend of oils can be a game changer for your skin. And if you have sensitive or acne prone skin, the right oil can actually help calm and heal your skin barrier.

Here are a few reasons I love face oil during the winter:

  1. Locks in Moisture: Face oils create a barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss and helping to maintain hydration levels during the dry winter months.

  2. Provides Essential Nutrients: Many face oils are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids that nourish and replenish the skin, promoting a healthy complexion.

  3. Soothes Dryness: Face oils can alleviate the discomfort of dry and flaky skin, providing relief from winter-related dehydration.

  4. Protects Against Harsh Elements: The occlusive nature of face oils acts as a protective barrier against cold winds and other environmental factors that can contribute to skin dryness and irritation.

How to choose the best oil for your skin:

You want a blend that is non-comedogenic (a rating of 2 or less), and uses high quality oils — especially high in organic, unrefined, and cold pressed oils to maintain the most nutrients and healing qualities. Some of my favorites are hemp, argan, and jojoba.

Single ingredient oils can be a decent starting place, but a balanced blend has the added benefits of multiple oils working together synergistically. A blend also means a better weight and feel. Be mindful of sourcing, because they aren’t always sustainable or high quality. A rancid or poorly manufactured oil can impact it’s effectiveness and potentially cause irritation or skin issues.

My tried-and-true is Everything Oil — a carefully designed blend created at the time I was highly reactive to almost every skincare product. It’s a soothing, nourishing, and effective blend that absorbs easily and is safe for sensitive and acne prone skin. No essential oils or sensitizing ingredients. Everything Oil has been tested on my sensitive skin and acne prone customers with amazing feedback.

How to incorporate oil into your skincare ritual:

To get the most moisturizing benefit out of your oil, use on clean, damp skin. Perfect for right after cleansing or spritzing with a hydrating mist. Always after any water based products like serums or toners.

Pro Tip: You can also boost your favorite face lotion by mixing in some oil to make it extra hydrating and boost it’s nutrient content!

Remember, everyone’s skin is different. If you are acne prone and concerned about using oil, start slowly by adding a small amount one time of day for a few days to see how your skin responds. Be careful the type of oils you choose, as many are not recommended for acne or sensitive skin.

You don’t have to have a different product for each part of the body — oils can often be multi use. Don’t forget to treat your neck and chest as an extension of your face. I also love using face oil to sooth my scalp. Have fun with it!
